South Korea

South Korea's SDR story is one of the most dramatic in the IMF's history. Starting from a tiny allocation reflecting its war-ravaged economy in the 1950s-60s, Korea grew to become a G20 economy. The 1997-98 Asian Financial Crisis saw Korea require an emergency $57 billion IMF package โ€” the largest in history at the time. Korea repaid fully ahead of schedule and has since become a net IMF creditor, with SDR holdings consistently above allocation.
