Russia joined the IMF in 1992 following the dissolution of the Soviet Union. During the 1998 financial crisis, Russia received emergency IMF support. Russia accumulated significant SDR holdings through its oil export revenues. Since February 2022, international sanctions related to the Ukraine invasion have severely constrained Russia's access to its international reserves, including SDR holdings. Russia's effective participation in IMF mechanisms has been significantly curtailed.
