India is a founding IMF member and has seen its SDR allocation grow steadily with its expanding economy. India holds more SDRs than its allocation, reflecting its strong reserve position. During the 1991 balance of payments crisis, India drew heavily on IMF resources. In the 2021 historic allocation, India received the 4th-largest share of any country. Calls for including the Indian rupee in the SDR basket are growing.
