France is a founding member of the IMF and a permanent SDR basket currency contributor through the euro. As an original Bretton Woods signatory, France helped design the SDR system. The French franc was an original SDR basket currency until its replacement by the euro in 1999. France actively participates in IMF lending programs and maintains a strong position in IMF governance.
